Rachel Nabors Donation Drive
I am friends with Rachel Nabors, the artist behind Subculture of One. Rachel is a remarkable person—she began publishing her own comics when she was 18, and now, at the age of 22, she is one of the few people I know who can support herself on her artwork alone. She is the definition of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps.
Rachel had a terrible accident when she was 14. She lost a tooth and, unknown to her doctors, she fractured her jaw. That fracture healed improperly, and now that she is older, the bone is weakening. Without surgery, the problem will worsen, and she will very likely lose all her teeth. Rachel is a lovely person, inside and out, and I do not want to see this happen to her.
Rachel has no health insurance, and even if she did, it probably would not cover dental problems. Dental insurance would most likely consider this cosmetic, despite the threat of losing her teeth, or they would write it off as a preexisting condition. She needs multiple procedures done, which will cost upwards of $15,000. Yes, you read that right. This is a problem that few people would be able to handle on their own.
