The HideEmail Script

Well, I don’t know if this counts as fun or not, but I wasn’t sure where else I would place a downloadable. LOL! This is a small script I wrote called HideEmail. It is what I use to include email links on this site without spam crawlers finding my address. Nifty, huh? The script works in three ways:

  1. By hiding your email address in a separate Perl file, which most spam programs cannot read.
  2. By breaking your email address into several parts, making it more difficult to piece back together.
  3. By encoding your email address into hex code, which most spam programs ignore.

It’s so simple, I don’t know why no one thought of it sooner. (Or maybe someone did, and Google failed me when I was looking for a script that does this.) There are similar Javascript options out there, but those don’t work if someone has disabled Javascript. HideEmail creates pure HTML links, so it is accessible to any browser. This is a server side option, and at 1 kilobyte, it is quite fast!

Minty gets a lot of spam

Now, I am by no means a programmer. This is a very simple script, and I make no guarantees. But I have been using it myself, and it works beautifully for me. I hope it works for you, too! Here it is in action: [an error occurred while processing this directive].

This script is offered free to anyone who wants to use it. If you found it useful, please consider making a small donation. You also can lend your support by linking to this website. Thank you so much!
